Coding and Intellectual Property Guide for Kids

Coding is like giving instructions to a computer so it can do what you want. Imagine you want someone to build a LEGO house for you: You'd have to tell them how you want them to put the pieces together to get a house that looks like what you wanted. Coding is similar, but instead of using regular words, you use special coding languages to talk to the computer.

When you write code for a computer program, you're creating intellectual property. Intellectual property (IP) is something that you create by using your brain, like a story, a song, or a piece of computer code. Just like regular property, like toys or video games, intellectual property has an owner. You own the intellectual property you create, and the law gives you ways to protect it so that other people can't use it without your permission. Just like you wouldn't want someone to take your favorite toy without asking, IP laws help make sure that inventors, artists, writers, and computer programmers can keep their creations safe from being copied or used.

Intellectual Property

When you create something new, whether it's a piece of software, an app, or a game, you want to make sure that no one else can take your hard work and claim it as their own. That's why IP protections exist. Copyright is the first type of protection for your code. As soon as you write something, whether it's code, a story, a poem, or a song, you own the copyright to it. That means that nobody can copy it unless you give them permission. You might also be able to protect computer code with a patent, a type of protection that covers inventions, if the code includes a new algorithm or technology that nobody has come up with before. And before you sell your new computer program, you'll probably want to apply for a trademark: Trademarks protect the names of products and brands.

IP is really important for computer programmers because their code is the foundation of many things we use every day, from apps on a phone to games on a computer. When programmers write code, they're solving problems and creating new things, and that takes time and talent. If someone else could just copy their work without permission, then they might not want to invest all of that time and effort to create new code, knowing that anyone could just take it from them without paying for it or even asking if they could use it.

Coding

Computer code is written in different programming languages. Instead of English, French, or Spanish, computers understand languages like Java, Python, and HTML. People use these languages to make things like computer software, phone apps, video games, and websites. Each language has its own rules, and different languages are better for making code to do different things. For instance, Python is a good language to use to make programs that look at and interpret lots of information, while HTML is the language that people use to make a Web page. But all of these languages help to make computers, phones, and other devices work in one way or another.

If you want to learn how to code, there are lots of fun ways to start. Many websites and apps can teach you how to create code by playing games or solving puzzles. You might even be able to learn about coding at school. You don't have to be an expert right away: Everyone starts by learning simple things, like how to make the computer show a word or move a character, before they can create a whole app or website. But over time, if you keep learning and practicing, you'll start being able to write your own programs and make cool things happen on a computer. You might even go into business as a software developer someday!
